Volunteer Educational Activities Assistant (Closing date: None)

Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust

About The Role

At WWT, we believe that the best way for people to understand and connect to wetlands is to experience them, so we bring awe-inspiring nature up close. We are looking for friendly, outgoing volunteers to support visitor activities, bringing experiences to life! You will be contributing to this aspect of our work by assisting the Education Department with the delivery of outdoor workshops for schools and other educational groups.

Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team, and we wouldn’t be able to maintain our internationally important wetland sites without their help. You will receive a very warm welcome, full induction & training, and be provided with any necessary equipment, uniforms, and anything else needed to thrive in your role.

Main tasks

  • Martin Mere has a range of activities available for visitors - you can choose to do them all to develop your experience or just focus on a few areas:
  • Assisting with the visitor service desk – meeting and greeting visitors on arrival, selling bird food, handing out Dragonfly Festival event guides
  • Undertaking moth trapping activities, otter talks, and flamingo talks
  • Helping to undertake the daily pond dipping activity by showing visitors what to do and helping to identify pond life species
  • Assisting with the Dragonfly Festival activities including a science show, story time, and a dragonfly bubble party

What skills do I need?

No previous experience is required for this role as full training will be provided, and a willingness to learn new skills is more important.

However, this role would suit you if:

  • You feel confident in talking to and engaging with members of the public, and are able to adapt your communication style to suit the audience (particularly children)
  • You have a good basic knowledge of UK wildlife and conservation
  • You enjoy working as part of a team of staff and volunteers
  • You are happy to work outside in all weather conditions
  • You are reasonably physically fit – as this role will involve some lifting and bending
  • You are reliable and have excellent time management to ensure sessions run on time
  • You have a strong commitment to excellent customer service
  • You have prior experience in an educational or learning setting
  • You are friendly and approachable with a positive attitude
