To regularly visit an allocated older person (or more than one if desired) who is lonely and/or socially isolated, and to form an ongoing relationship.
Meetings may take place in the befriendee’s home; or at suitable venues outside the home, provided that theVolunteer Co-ordinator agrees and procedural guidance is followed.
To report back to the Volunteer Co-ordinator as agreed.
To feed any issues or concerns back to the Volunteer Co-ordinator.
Overview Of The Role
Tasks vary according to individual need, but may include:-
· Making a cup of tea or coffee
· Helping to read mail to a visually impaired befriendee, with the agreement of the Volunteer Co-ordinator
· Providing company to alleviate loneliness and social isolation
· Accompanying someone to take a walk or go out for a break
· On occasion, going to a local shop to purchase items needed by the befriendee.
* Good communication skills are essential
* Understanding of confidentiality
* Sense of humour
* Understanding of and empathy with the needs of older lonely and socially isolated people
* Patience and sensitivity
* Reliability
* Ability to deal with emergencies
* Requirement to undertake induction training, work to guidelines and policies on Safeguarding, Health and Safety, Confidentiality, Equal Opportunities etc.
* Completion of DBS check if required
* If driving in connection with your volunteering role, you must ensure you are properly insured to do so.
