Ward Based Patient Support Volunteer

Mersey & West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

To work alongside staff to support patients on wards at mealtimes and refreshment periods.

Tasks may include the following:

• Assist staff with meal distribution and serving drinks when required

• Assist patients to prepare for their meal

• Encourage patients to wash their hands or provide clinical wipes

• Clean and tidy bedside table in preparation for the patient’s meal

• Ensure food and drink is within easy reach, opening packets/cartons or cutting up food if required

• Encourage patients to eat and drink plenty of fluids

• Sit alongside patient at mealtimes, encouraging them to enjoy their food through chatting and encouragement

• Spend time with patients who are experiencing loneliness

Volunteers are not expected to be involved in any of the following:

• Clinical or medical treatments of any kind

• Psychological interventions

• Moving or handling of patients

• Personal care activities including toileting and bathing

• Escorting patients off hospital premises

• Volunteers must not comment on patients’ clinical care or condition unless at the request of a clinical staff member and then only relay information agreed and scripted by the clinical member of staff

Able to liaise with professional staff at all levels

Able to demonstrate empathy and compassion

Adaptable and willing to learn

Punctual and reliable

Able to work independently and as part of a team

Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment 

Understanding of need for confidentiality

Commitment to uphold trust core values and NHS policies

Daytimes only at Ormskirk Hospital (limited opportunity) Daytime and evenings at Southport Hospital Shift patterns are:- 09:00- 13:00 13:00-17:00 (evening times are usually 17.00-21.00)
